MDT stands for Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and is a precise initial assessment tool PRO~PT MDT clinicians use for back, neck, and extremity problem and pain treatment. An evidence-based approach, the key distinction of MDT is its initial assessment component—a safe and reliable means to accurately reach a diagnosis and, only then, begin the appropriate pain treatment plan.

Our Program

We use the McKenzie Method of MDT, which emphasizes patient empowerment. We want to focus on what the patient actually needs and less about what the therapist wants to do. On your first visit, a physical therapist will put you through a series of repeated movements and positions, and will then assess two things as a result of these movements: symptomatic and mechanical response. Patients are classified accordingly, and an effective program of treatment is then implemented.

According to the McKenzie Institute, studies show that for lower back and neck pain, if you receive MDT within the first 14 days following injury, your symptoms will most likely resolve within the first three to five treatments.

There are other substantial benefits to MDT you should know about:

  • Backed by years of research, evidence, and clinical practice
  • Known to show results in as little as two to three visits
  • Assessment-driven and individualized treatment plans
  • Non-invasive—no needles or scalpels
  • Self-directed and managed—our PTs work with you and teach you
  • Preventative—learn lifelong knowledge and skills
  • Cost-efficient—treatment without expensive tests and procedures

If you have suffered for longer than 14 days, MDT still can help—but it may take longer to see improvement or resolution.

PRO~PT clinics are the only physical therapy facilities in the area with highly trained MDT clinicians. Each physical therapist has been through the rigorous MDT training process and follows the MDT critical guidelines to offer the most up-to-date, effective treatment option in spine care.
